Mosaic Arts is more than an art gallery

Mosaic Arts founders Lynh Nguyen (left) and her sister Van Nguyen.

Mosaic Arts, the new art gallery next to the Mosaic District, is more than a showcase for local artists; the gallery also has a studio offering art classes.

There are two-hour workshops scheduled in acrylic painting, abstract painting, drawing, mosaics, and other topics. There are also creative happy hours where participants choose the medium they want to work with. All materials are provided.

Artist Linda Lowery speaks during a reception at Mosaic Arts on March 12, with one of her encaustic paintings in the background.

Sisters and artists Van Nguyen and Lynh Nguyen opened Mosaic Arts in December at 2931-B Eskridge Road in Merrifield in the space formerly occupied by Auntie Te’s consignment shop. Auntie Te’s closed in 2021 as the Covid pandemic killed sales.

Lynh specializes in painting, and Van focuses on sculpture. Sometimes they collaborate on the same artwork. They also live together while caring for their mother in Annandale.

Mosaic Arts is currently hosting a solo exhibit of encaustic portraits by Linda Lowery of Alexandria. Encaustic is an ancient form of painting using hot wax, Lowery explained at the opening reception for her show on March 12. The exhibit will be up through April 2.

Mosaic Arts offers free memberships to local artists. That is interpreted broadly, as the gallery’s website says, “If you make art, you are an artist.”

  1. Very nice addition to the community and lovely, hard working owners. Perhaps the future of brick and mortar commerce looks like customer engagement ? through classes, groups, community, product demos, etc. I’d buy my art and art supplies from these good people – I’d eat and buy gear at the eatery that teaches cooking classes; buy my books at the store that hosts my book club etc. Woodcrafters seems to do this well and I often wonder if there are more opportunities?

    1. PRECISELY. I had the same conversation with Van & also with Jay at FPA on the same night. There’s no reason that artists can’t also be writers & producers & chefs. Art of all these types is meant to be tactile – please teach the audience to participate!

  2. Mosaic Arts is a wonderful studio that exudes artistic talent and skill. My family has been multiple times and the art on display is always a wonder to see and the activities were engaging and enjoyable. I highly recommend going to Mosaic Arts for your artistic needs and for getting young family into the arts.

  3. The art is mesmerizing and varied. I have several pieces now hanging in my home. The spirit of community that Van and Lynh have created here is JUST what we all need in this time and place. Check out their workshops and happy hours and experience the exceptional talent and loving spirit of Mosaic Arts.

  4. I plan to attend a reception here on April 8th, 2023, 5-7 PM. I wandered in while taking a walk & had the most amazing conversation with Van. You should do the same.
