Mural, safety improvements planned for Annandale street

Tom Davis Drive

The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board approved an $80,000 grant to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety on Tom Davis Drive in Annandale.

Tom Davis Drive is a county-managed street that connects John Marr Drive and Columbia Pike.

The Regional Roadway Safety Program grant will develop designs for traffic-calming measures, such as protected bike lanes, painted meanders, and chicanes (serpentine curves to slow traffic).

In addition, Fairfax County’s Community Revitalization Section is planning an asphalt mural on Tom Davis Drive “to create a culturally relevant sense of place and supplement the project’s traffic safety improvements.” The design of the mural hasn’t been determined.

According to the Transportation Planning Board, “The census tract where the project is located has the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities in Fairfax County.”

  1. 80 k for signs that say- DONT STAND IN THE ROAD.

    USE THE FREAKING CROSSWALK LAZY.

the mural should be silhouettes of the dead pedestrians as warning to the people who seem to always be standing in the road

    1. Jeff, the article is 6 sentences long and you obviously didn’t even read it before posting your insane screed about “lazy” people. Take a look in the mirror.

  2. Oh boy. More bike lanes. And a mural to further distract drivers. All in the name of “traffic calming”, the BoS’ new buzz word. Can’t wait.

  3. A bike lane? Connecting to what? A 1/5 of a mile protected bike lane? How many bikes use TD drive? Why do you want spend money on such a short stretch? A mural on the pavement? More distraction. A problem that needs a solution is the entrance/exit to the post office. It’s too narrow (or drivers are too dumb) for both things to happen at the same time.

  4. This is a waste of taxpayer money. No wonder our property taxes go up every year because they look for the dumbest way to spend our money rather than let us decide how to spend it. Tom Davis Drive is nothing but a cut through to avoid the light at Columbia and John Marr. And where are all of the interconnecting bike routes? They don’t exist! Annandale is not bike friendly. If they want spend money, they buy the property between CVS and Popeyes and develop it into a town center with shops and a promenade. And get that homeless guy and his junk collection out of the bus stop in front of CVS. That is literally in the center of town and the first thing that anybody notices about Annandale when passing through

  5. Guess what, folks? Miles of bike lanes don’t simply pop up out of nowhere fully formed into a sophisticated bike network….I wish! In order to improve the pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure in Annandale, incremental improvements are needed. With a grant available to install some of these measures, we should be celebrating the addition of bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly improvements at minimal cost to the community. Perhaps people will not “STAND IN THE ROAD” if they have sidewalks (in good repair) available to them in the first place, and will “USE THE CROSSWALK LAZY” if crosswalks are available that are conveniently placed and respected by the wild drivers in this area who seem to think that every single person who is outside of a car is an idiot.
