Native seedling sale underway

Common buttonbush

The annual native tree and shrub seedling sale is underway.

The sale is sponsored by the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District with the goal of adding more native plans to the environment to prevent soil erosion, cleanse the air and water, provide a habitat for wildlife, and cool the climate.

Eastern redbud

The 2020 sale features small shrubs and trees that are hardy in small spaces, display beautiful colors and bear gorgeous flowers and fruits.

The Super Shrub and Tiny Tree package offers eight seedlings (two of each type) for $15: silky dogwood, common buttonbush, smooth sumac, and Eastern redbud.

The Space Savers package, also $15, offers seedlings two each of these species: New Jersey tea, mapleleaf viburnum, aromatic sumac, and beautyberry.

Seedling packages can be ordered online and must be paid in advance with a credit or debit card.

The seedling sale will continue until April 10 or until all packages have been sold. It’s best to order early, as the seedlings often sell out within the first few weeks.

The seedlings can be picked up April 17, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., or April 18, 9 a.m.-noon, at the Sleepy Hollow Bath and Racquet Club, 3516 Sleepy Hollow Road, Falls Church.
