New principal sought for Glasgow

Glasgow Middle School

Fairfax County Public Schools is beginning the hiring process for a new principal to succeed Victor Powell at Glasgow Middle School.

Powell, who has led Glasgow for the past three years, has accepted a new position as supervisor of Title I programs at Prince William County Public Schools. His last day at Glasgow was Aug. 2.

Deirdre Lavery has come out of retirement to serve as interim principal. She was Glasgow principal in the mid-2000s and was later principal at Lewis High School.

“She has already been supporting Glasgow Middle School this spring and has established strong relationships with our leadership team and staff. Ms. Lavery’s commitment and experience make her an ideal leader to guide us through this transition,” said Region 2 Assistant Superintendent Megan Vroman.

“Serving as part of the Glasgow Middle School community has been an honor and privilege,” Powell wrote in an email to the Glasgow staff and community. “I am forever humbled by the trust and support extended to me by the staff, students, families, and the broader FCPS community.”

“Together, we have created many positive memories, and I am proud to be a part of the growth that I have seen in our students over the years,” he said.

“In the coming weeks, we will share more details about the principal selection process, which will begin after the school year starts,” Vroman said. “This will ensure we can meaningfully engage with the Glasgow community in this important decision.”

The job vacancy announcement on the FCPS website lists the requirements for the next Glasgow principal, including the following:

  • Master’s degree.
  • Seven years of progressively more responsible experience in teaching and administration or supervision, some at the middle school level, with a minimum of three years of administrative experience.
  • Postgraduate educational license.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern public middle school education.
  • Knowledge of public school organization, administration, and support activities.
  • Ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of instructional and support personnel.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.

The salary range is $130,304 to $198,228.

  1. Victor Powell was an outstanding principal for Glasgow middle school and has been a very very effective leader over his career. He’s going to do amazing things and Prince William County Public Schools.

I have read people making comments in past Threads. So let me clarify a few things. He was always walking the hallways helping students make better decisions and to get to class. He was there to help support the staff if they had any questions or needed any assistance he was always there. He was very open to talking to the community and hearing out any questions or concerns that they have had. He was involved in the community. He was involved in academics. And he wanted the school to be very well run

He is the principal who helped push Glasgow middle school to get to title one. He is the principal who tried to reduce the size of the population of Glasgow so that it was not overcrowded like it is. He is the one who would hire extra security to help with safety and making sure that the school runs efficiently

He never showed frustration. He never showed anger. He was very levelheaded and focused on building people up rather than tearing people down. Unfortunately that is not been the same way for all leaders of Glasgow in the past. But he is An outstanding principal. An outstanding leader and all in all in amazing person and amazing human being.

For those of you who would like to make your comments without truly knowing what went on in that school, save it.

Deirdre Lavery Is going to be a great Interim principal while they look for a candidate. She was principal of the year in 2008 At Glasgow middle school and she knows the demographics and she knows the area. Many of her administrators including Tangy Millard Have grown and gone on to do amazing things.

Tangy Is now the head of the high schools in Prince William County Public schools. Larry Aiello Is now an assistant principal at Mason crest Elementary school. Bianca Aiello Is now the director of student services at Poe middle school.

Glasgow has a great administrative team. Victor has done an outstanding job putting together a very strong team that is there for the kids. Therefore the staff. And there for the community. He wants the community to be successful even though he’s moving to a higher position, he will always want everyone to be successful

In my personal opinion, I do truly think that Sean Rolon, The principal at Justice high school, Would be a good sounding board on a potential new hire at Glasgow. He filled in as an administrator there two years ago so he knows the population as well and I feel like it would be a great thing for him to be involved as it is to justice and it would keep everybody on one cohesive focus.

The biggest thing to remember is this. You need not rush. Rushing a candidate is not going to be productive. You need to hire the right candidate not the quickest candidate

Students staff and community should all work together.

With that Glasgow will find a Good new principal just like justice hired and outstanding new principal themselves
