The “Art in Daily Spaces” initiative invites 10 local artists to showcase their Pop Art creations in commercial spaces throughout Annandale.

The artworks will be displayed in such places as restaurants, coffee shops, stores, hair salons, laundromats, or office lobbies.

“The goal is to seamlessly integrate art into people’s everyday environments,” states an announcement about the project. Art in Daily Spaces will “provide casual visitors and patrons the opportunity to encounter, appreciate, and purchase local artists’ works at affordable prices.”

CAFÉ (Community Art for Everyone) received a $4,805 grant from ArtsFairfax to coordinate the project. “It’s not enough but it is a very good opportunity to start a new project,” says artist and CAFÉ President Hannah Joo.

“We believe that employing the Pop Art style can effectively steer Annandale towards becoming more vibrant, engaging, and appealing,” Joo says.

She describes Pop Art “as an art movement that uses mass-produced objects rooted in popular and mass culture including elements from TV, comic books, and advertising posters.”

“Our objective is to create an art theme that resonates with the masses, ensuring that art is accessible and relatable to everyone,” Joo says. “We aspire to foster a sense of understanding and empathy, enabling many individuals to connect through the lens of Pop Art, as they explore the facets of popular culture within Annandale.”

Each artist selected for the project can present up to 10 artworks using various media, such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, photography, pastels, ceramics, fiber, and sculpture. Participating artists will receive $200. Artists will retain all proceeds from sales.

  1. Love public art! Can we get some sculptures too? The murals in the shopping centers add so much brightness too. We could attract people to the neighborhood with art tours.
