New restaurants coming to Barcroft Plaza

These empty spaces at Barcroft Plaza have been leased to restaurants.

New dining options are coming to Barcroft Plaza,

A Mexican restaurant called Taco Zocalo is taking over the former Subway space, reports a spokesperson for Federal Realty. It is expected to open in spring 2024.

Taco Zocalo is a locally owned chain with outlets in Reston, Ashburn, and Chantilly.

NY Chopped Cheese is leasing the former Hong Kong Express location and will be operating under the name Maqur Café. It is locally owned and Barcroft Plaza will be their first location. It is also anticipated to open this spring.

A vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant called Chay is under construction in the space next to Jake’s Ice Cream.

  1. I wondered what chopped cheese meant. From Wikipedia:
The chopped cheese, also known as the chop cheese,[1] is a type of sandwich originating from New York City. Found in bodegas throughout Upper Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens,[2] it is made on a grill with ground beef (typically pre-formed ground beef patties), onions, adobo or other seasonings, and cheese, all of which are chopped together on the grill as the meat and onions cook and the cheese melts. It is served with lettuce, tomatoes, and condiments on a hero roll.[1][3]

  2. I was devastated to see Hong Kong Express gone. They had the most amazing General Tsao Shrimp!

    1. Any idea what happened to them and if they relocated? I was in there a few days before they closed and had no idea they were leaving.

  3. Just put in a Hot Shoppe with Mighty Mo’s and Slim Jims and Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake in place of all three. We have way too many of the other type restaurants and I am sorry to lose Subway. It is hard enough to find a place to eat like we had in the past. Black Orchid, Caldwells, Ribsters, Tom Westons, Bobs Big Boy, The Old Spaghetti Mill and the Mining Company.

    1. What was the name of the restaurant that was before Silverado? Also, the two pizza places in Annandale? One was near poppeys and the other was across from Giant on 236.

  4. What about Foxfire grill which unfortunately has been forced out in favor of a ramen noodle restaurant I believe. Where have all the traditional restaurants gone? The only ones left are Glory Days and Silverado in this area.

        1. Oh please! All those mourning the restaurants of their youths have to look in the mirror and recognize they are OLD and the restaurant they miss were not that good.

There is still Longhorn, Olive Garden, Pizza Hut, City Diner, First Watch, Panara, Denny’s.

For a “Progressive” site, there are most definitely a bunch of commenters on this site who are wistful for the “good old days.”

            1. Liam, do you think that is an insightful comment?

By the way, who said “all change is good”?

Liam, please try to remember, not all change is bad.

        2. Dirk, so traditional food is “American” food. Got it, and his examples are Glory Days, which serves freezer burnt Sysco wings and Silverado, which serves properly cooked Sysco wings.

    1. Dogfish left after the site owner tried to raise the rent. Place has been empty for the better part of 18 months now. Apparently will be replaced with a Raising Canes.

      The free market at work.

  5. When i want upscale American food I head to Tysons. For 3 star food we go to Silver Diner. Foxfire was bad and Silverado has poor service.

    1. I’m glad you’re not a restaurant critic. Silver diner is 3 star?! How about honorable mentions. There aren’t table cloth, silverware and crystal restaurants that merit a 3 star. In the 25 years going to Silverado I’ve NEVER encountered poor service. Did you bring your dissatisfaction to the attention of the manager? Or are you you using this site to degrade a restaurant without stating any facts?

  6. Not insightful as much as factual, given our current trajectory. Regardless of party, American voters locally and nationally agree that we are on the wrong track. So as a matter of fact, less change is better than more change.
As a matter of opinion, I would much rather have traditional American restaurants than ramen or any other sort of sodium bomb pasta that can be had for pennies at Walmart.

    1. I respect your opinion Liam. For myself personally, I am looking forward to the day we are all driving battery powered vehicles and drinking insect protein smoothies.

      1. 1) And in 1972 a single income family with a blue collar job could afford a modest home. You prove his point.
        2) The country has not been this divided since the Civil War.
        3) Next time, May as well cite the national enquirer.

  7. Is it just me or does the landlord at barcroft plaza seem to be unduly focused on playing hardball with their tenants. Every couple of years this happens; longtime tenants forced to move due to exorbitant rent increases
