Parents set up food pantry at Annandale HS

The
Annandale High School PTSA has started a food pantry at the school to serve students at risk of going hungry.
“With
nearly 60 percent of our kids at AHS participating in the free or reduced-price
lunch program, we were concerned about them over the long winter break” says PTSA
member Chase Chichester.
As
a result, PTSA President Norma Foti encouraged parents to set up a food pantry.
The PTSA got the pantry started with some good discounts at the Annandale Kmart
before it closed for good in mid-November.

Parents
and community members can drop off food items for the pantry in a shopping cart
at the school, donate online through PayPal, or through a wish list on Amazon.

Students
will be encouraged to pick up bags of food before weekends, holidays and
extended breaks. The school’s social worker, Alissa Green, is overseeing the effort at the school and will make sure
students, teachers, counselors know about the pantry.
People who want to drop off food for the pantry are encouraged to donate
healthy, nonperishable items, such as fortified cereal; canned tuna chicken; oatmeal; peanut butter; pull-tab
cans of soup; 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice; granola bars; pasta; or rice.
Non-food items are also needed, such as full-size bottles of shampoo; laundry
detergent; paper towels; and bars of soap; and dishwashing liquid. See the full list here.
As the AHS PTSA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, all donations are
tax deductible.
