“Toothless,” a brown and white cat
from Thailand, actually has three teeth, says Janis Nicholas of Annandale. She
adopted him earlier this year from Homeward Trails, an organization that was
rescuing dogs from the illegal dog meat trade in Thailand and brought a few
cats back to the United States, too.

“Toothless is super sweet and does
amazingly well with our kids and dog, and you’d never know he was FIV positive,”
says Nicholas. FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) weakens a cat’s immune
system, making them more susceptible to infections, so Toothless stays indoors.

“A lot of people get weird about FIV,
but he is perfectly fine,” Nicholas says. “I was never a cat person but if I
was going to adopt a cat, I wanted a special needs cat,” Nicholas says. FIV can
be transmitted to other cats but not to humans.
“Toothless didn’t look cute or
cuddly, so he had trouble getting adopted,” she says. When he was in Thailand,
he lost his teeth when a couple of kids shot him in the face with a BB gun. He
also has a bald spot on his face and a permanent drippy eye.

Nicholas thinks he used to live
with a family and ran away, because he is gentle with her young children. “When
they tug at her ears or tail, he’ll tolerate it or walk away. He’s such a sweet
cat!”
