Play ball! It’s registration time for Mason District Little League
Calling all kids age 4-12: Baseball season is starting. Registration for baseball and teeball is now open for the Mason District Little League (MDLL) spring season and will close on March 20.
The MDLL is an all-volunteer organization that serves Annandale, Alexandria, and Falls Church. The first games will be April 14 at Mason District Park. Practices will start by March 29.
“MDLL provides a safe and fun environment where boys and girls can learn the game of baseball and the skills to succeed,” says MDLL President Toni Matheny. “MDLL focuses not only on the development of fundamentals, but also on sportsmanship and character.”
In 2011, 355 boys and girls participated in the league, and more than 10 percent of them were scholarship players. MDLL used a grant from Fairfax County’s Neighborhood Enhancement Partnership Program to expand its community outreach efforts and attract more children from communities near Dowden Terrace in Alexandria, Bailey’s Community Center, and the Skyline Center.
Through a partnership with the county, MDLL has made improvements to the fields at Mason District Park, Dowden Terrace, and Parklawn Elementary School. “We also promote good community citizenship by cleaning the fields after we use them and by sponsoring clean-up days at the parks,” Matheny says.
