Police officer shoots dog at Green Spring Gardens
An officer from
the Mason Police District “deployed deadly force against a dog” around 12:30
p.m. on June 25 at Green Spring Gardens, the Fairfax County Police Department
reports.
Officers initially responded to a complaint about two dogs running loose at the park and that one of them bit two park visitors.
As officers
located the dogs and attempted to contain them, one dog advanced aggressively.
One of the officers fired one round, striking the dog, a German Shepherd, in its leg.
The dog ran
off and ultimately returned home. The dog was taken to a local veterinary
hospital with what was believed to be a non-life threatening injury. The owner
elected to have the dog euthanized.
A
criminal investigation is underway of all aspects of this event, FCPD states.
The
officer who shot the dog is a 13-year
veteran of the FCPD and has been cross-trained to supplement the Animal
Protection Police.
Chief
Edwin C. Roessler Jr. has directed the Internal Affairs Bureau to
conduct an administrative investigation in accordance with policy, along with
an independent review by the police auditor. The name of the officer will be
released by Roessler within 10 days.

I hope we can soon learn more about what type of dogs, how bad the bites were, and how the dogs got loose. Well handled by the police, in my opinion.
This story is just sad sad sad. 🙁
