Police release new video on ATM murder; reward offered for tips

Updated 6:30 p.m., Oct. 29: Fairfax County Police released additional video footage and still photos related to the murder of Nelson Alexander at the Wells Fargo ATM on Annandale Road on Oct. 20.

At a press briefing on Oct. 29, law enforcement officials implored anyone who recognizes the individuals in the video or has any other information about the crime to contact law enforcement.

The ATF is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, said Charlie Patterson, special agent in charge of the ATF’s Washington Field Division.

A video shared at the briefing shows the killer and two other young men getting on a Metrobus around 1:20 a.m. near the Seven Corners Shopping Center Arlington Boulevard. They rode the bus and got off in Alexandria.

The video shows one of the men on the bus drinking from a cup. Detectives are asking for help identifying where the cup may have been purchased. They also ask business owners in the Seven Corners Shopping Center area to review their surveillance footage to help identify the men involved.

A previously released video shows the suspect shooting the 73-year-old Alexander in the chest at about 5:20 a.m. on Oct. 20. Alexander died three days later.

Another video shows a 2009 Nissan Murano leaving the scene of the crime. It was stolen from the 5200 block of Dover Place in Alexandria near where the three suspects got off the bus. The SUV was discovered unoccupied by a patrol officer Sunday morning on Marshall Street near the scene of the crime. Police believe it was brought to the ATM and was abandoned after the murder.

The three young men in the video were probably involved in other criminal activity, such as breaking into cars or stealing cars, in the hours before the murder, said Maj. Ed O’Carroll, chief of the FCPD’s Major Crimes, Cyber and Forensics Bureau.

Police have been inundated with tips from the community and urge members of the public to look again at security videos from several days before the crime, O’Carroll said.

O’Carroll also urged the shooter to turn himself in and urged the two “persons of interest” shown in the bus video to contact the police and tell their side of the story.

He didn’t announce which bus stop the men exited because “we want people to be open minded.”

“Help us find this killer,” he said. “Help us get justice for Mr. Alexander. He deserves it. His wonderful family deserves it. Our community deserves it.”
