Police report violent incident in Culmore

Knollwood Drive [Google Maps]

The police were all over Culmore last night and the helicopter buzzed overhead in response to a violent incident in the 6000 block of Knollwood Drive, Bailey’s Crossroads, at about 12:40 a.m.

Two men were stabbed and one was stabbed and shot, according to a tweet from the Fairfax County Police Department. All three are in the hospital. Police initially said one victim had life-threatening injuries but later reported he was upgraded to stable.

This was the second violent incident in Culmore in a week. There was a shooting last week in the 6000 block of Vista Drive Oct. 17.

In other FCPD news, police recovered two stolen vehicles. In one case, officers stopped a 1999 Honda sedan on Braddock Road at Port Royal Road, Annandale, shortly after 9 a.m. on Oct. 22. The car had been reported stolen. Police arrested Jeremy Snell, 34, of Alexandria for grand larceny and possession of burglarious tools.

In the other incident, officers responded after a man saw his 2017 Chevy van that he had reported stolen the day before. Officers stopped the van on Leesburg Pike at Rock Spring Avenue, Bailey’s Crossroads, at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 20. Two juveniles ran away, but officers arrested them after a short foot pursuit. Charges are pending.

  1. And what is Penny Gross doing about this, playing marjon? How many of these have to happen until we get change. Now you know why people vote for Trump, because we have idiots amongst the Democrats that need to retire for they have become impotent. Culmore needs to be bulldozed and re-invented. You people in Lake Barcroft that keep voting for Gross are you getting exactly what you asked for at your front door every week.

    1. I usually vote blue but I voted for Penny's Republican opponent in the last election. She got hundreds of code violations fixed in the Vista Gardens complex in Culmore in 2009, which, if we're being honest, was putting a bandage on a gaping wound. Completely ridiculous. Vista Gardens and the rest of the slums in Culmore should've been demolished back then, but it's not too late for that. If someone runs for her seat on the BoS on a promise to do just that, they've got my vote.

    1. Its been happening for 25 years, stop blaming the economy as Gross has down for 20 years. Its poor leadership stupid!

    2. There's one numb-nut who continuously posts about how awful things are because of Penny Gross. He's an impotent loser and the world would be a better place without his inane and repetitive comments. And, of course he's a Trump supporter.

  2. And the last of the excuses were the housing boom bust, the economic crash, government shutdowns, and COVID, etc. Ironically, Merrifield, Alexandria City and Arlington have not seemed to suffer from these crises, because those areas are booming and are literally at Mason's border.

The problem is not the economy, it it Penny Gross and the BoS.

  3. the problem is many things, lack of police patrols, lack of building maintence, lack of the country doing anything about a million clear violations, the lack of the county and the building owners caring about over crowding, the fact they don't force them to have private security and cameras, etc etc

  4. Can we just wipe out Baily's Crossroad with all the Xhit that is going on there.
It is a pocket of crime that drags this whole area down.

    Just wipe it down.
So many resources on such a small area with problematic ppl.

  5. A large complex within Culmore has been undergoing renovations for well over a year. On the exterior, all the buildings have been painted, windows and doors replaced, and landscaping cleaned up. All buildings are surrounded by plentiful green space; I have not been inside these buildings but they appear to be fairly well kept by the management company and owners. Neither of these entities is Penny Gross or the county, BTW. They are run by businesses seemingly doing a decent job making sure the buildings are safe and livable. Government should not interfere with a successful business model.

I am not a Penny Gross fan, but a development of occupied apartments with the owners collecting rent and making upgrades for people at the bottom wrung of our society (economically) is not a candidate for government seizure. In fact, the government should do what they can to help, not 'bulldoze it.' By all means enforce code violations that put people in danger. Overcrowding is a good example. More police presence may help – I remember when FCPD had a small field office in one of the buildings on Glen Carlin but I think that is gone. Did it help? Someone more clever and well versed than I am can surely cite other things the county could do to help beyond 'bulldozing.'

Let's say they do simply raze the apartments. The people living there will go where? To the house on your street their cousin just bought where they will pile in so they can afford it, parking a dozen or so early '90's Hondas and Toyotas along the street. This goes unabated throughout Mason District.

Fact is, apartments are a necessary ingredient in the housing mix. Not sure how much Penny Gross can step up enforcement of code violations, but seizing a viable business is not the answer. I would never vote for any government official who has the power to do that. For his part, President Trump has tried to stem the tide of illegal immigration, but opposition to those efforts have mostly rendered them ineffective, and who knows how many of the people causing problems in places like Culmore are illegal or not? We've reached the point where Virginia as a legal entity doesn't seem to care, and many in our society want the police defunded, which will result in less of a police presence in places like Culmore. This also is out of Penny Gross's purview.

Its amazing to me the lack of perspective a lot of people have on who comment on this site. You think the economy is bad here? Guess why so many immigrants RISK THEIR LIVES to come to the US, and especially flock to the DC area? Because this area hasn't even come close to feeling the pain of a bad economy like other areas of the country have. 'The ruined economy is Trump's fault.' Please – unemployment was at historic lows up until the pandemic. Check your 401k in a couple years if Biden wins; you will likely not be too pleased. And be glad you live in this area with all it has to offer. Conversely, if it is so bad, move out.

Areas like Culmore exist during economic booms and depressions alike. Its not Trump's fault, its not Penny Gross's fault, not the economy's fault, it is a reality and a problem that no one has figured out how to solve yet. Put a moment of thought into how to actually help instead of writing repetitive drivel for once.

  6. I am talking about the apartments along Glen Carlyn Road that have been undergoing renovations for over a year. No, I am not high, I am driving by them daily. I also see the people who live there walking their children to school, waiting with them at the bus stops, having pop up yard sales, and trying to make their way. This does not represent all the apartments, but many have been renovated. And regardless, simply tearing them down does nothing to fix the problem. Read the last sentence of my previous post, and stop writing worthless drivel.

    1. Taking those horrible bunker like buildings down would be an improvement. The landlord took all the shrubs away, probably for security reasons. As a result the buildings look plopped. For low income buildings the place is reasonably kept, but concentrating so many low income immigrants is nothing shy of a ghetto. And ghettos are not good for anyone including residents and adjoining: neighbors, schools, communities, and commercial districts. That is why Baileys is so hard to develop. What developer would risk capital investments in a ghetto?………no one. And that is why Baileys is a bust on revitalization. It will never happen with Gross and the current socio-economic demographics.
