Election officers needed for Nov. 5

Fairfax County still needs hundreds of people to work at the polls on Election Day, Nov. 5. People fluent in another language are especially needed.

The Fairfax County Electoral Board recently approved a compensation increase for poll workers: $175 for election officers, $200 for assistant chief election officers, and $250 for chief election officers.

Election officers are expected to arrive at their polling place by 5 a.m. and stay until all the results are counted and verified after the polls close at 7 p.m. Whenever possible, election officers are assigned to their home precinct. To qualify, you need to be a registered voter in Virginia, complete documentation for employment eligibility, be available to work on Election Day, and attend a training session.

If you’re interested in being an election officer, you can apply online through the Virginia State Board of Elections. You can also apply by calling the Fairfax County Office of Elections, 703-324-4735, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., or by email. Include your full name, current address, daytime telephone number, and date of birth. This information is necessary to verify your voter registration.

The Nov. 5 ballot will include candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, Fairfax County sheriff, and the House of Delegates, plus a school bond referendum.
