Public invited to Monopoly Tournament at Annandale High School
Come show off your Monopoly skills at a tournament hosted by the Annandale High School Parent Teacher Association.
The Monopoly Tournament is Saturday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Clausen Hall in Annandale High School. Everyone is invited. Register here.
The event is a fundraiser for the PTSA. Registration is $15 for adults and $10 for students. That includes lunch with two slices of pizza and a drink.
The grand prize is $200 plus a Monopoly game.
There will be two time-limited games in the morning, followed by a lunch break. Winners from the morning will compete in a semi-final game after lunch to determine the four finalists who will compete in the championship game.
Players should be prepared for some stiff competition. Assistant Principal Brian Valentine, the winner of the most recent AHS Monopoly Tournament, in 2019, plays the game on the international level. He placed third at the Monopoly World Championship in 2015 in Macau. He used the battleship token.
“I had always played as a kid with my family,” Valentine told the A-Blast. “Whenever we had game nights, Monopoly would be the game we played,” he said. “I had started winning pretty often and I wanted to see how I would play against other people I don’t know.” After coming in fourth in his first tournament in 2011, he started competing around the world.
Valentine’s official bio for the 2015 World Championship says he owns 15 Monopoly board games, and his favorite is the Franklin Mint Deluxe Edition which has gold tokens and wood casing.
The first AHS Monopoly Tournament, in 2018, was won by English teacher William Maglisceau.
