Rep. Beyer wins the Democratic Primary
Rep. Don Beyer easily won the Democratic Primary on Aug. 4, beating four other challengers.
Beyer represents the 8th District in Congress, which includes nearly all of Mason District, along with Arlington, Alexandria, and other areas in Northern Virginia.
Bert Mizusawa won the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate.
Beyer got 65.8 percent of the vote, the Virginia Department of Elections reported. Mo Seifeldein came in second with 18.9 percent, followed by Adam Dunigan with 65.8 percent, Michael Christian Duffin with 3.3 percent, and Lorena Thorne Bruner with 2.5 percent.
Beyer will face Republican candidate Tony Sabio, a former CIA officer, in the midterm elections on Nov. 3.

Following the primary results, Beyer thanked those who voted for him, promising to “continue to do all I can to justify that sacred trust.”
“Today Northern Virginians are beset by skyrocketing prices, attacks on many of our neighbors, and major threats to our democratic system,” he said. “Rather than help Americans concerned about inflation, President Trump’s Republican allies are enabling his tariffs, supporting his disastrous war, slashing healthcare for working people, and turning a blind eye to some of the worst corruption ever seen in this country.”
Beyer accused Republicans of lacking the courage to stand up to Trump. “To fix this mess, we must win back control of Congress,” he said. “I am throwing myself into that fight, working to elect Democrats across the country starting right here in Virginia, and doing all we can to restore sanity and decency.”
Mizusawa, a former deputy undersecretary of the Army, will face Sen. Mark Warner in the general election on Nov. 3. Warner did not have a primary opponent.
Mizusawa got 51.5 percent of the vote in the Republican Primary. David Williams got 28.8 percent, and Kim Farington got 19.7 percent.
In a fundraising email after the primary, Warner branded Mizasawa as a “cheerleader for President Donald Trump and his dangerous agenda.”
“He’s a Trump campaign alum who routinely brags about writing President Trump’s foreign policy and believes that the skyrocketing price of gas is ‘a small price to pay’ for Trump’s war-of-choice with Iran,” Warner said.
He said Mizusawa supports the use of taxpayer dollars for Trump’s gold-plated ballroom; supports the “Save America Act,” which would suppress voting; and calls for a third term for Trump.
Voter turnout in Fairfax County was 2 percent in the Republican Primary and 8 percent in the Democratic Primary.
