Far-right extremist Hung Cao easily won the Republic Primary for the U.S. Senate in Virginia. He will challenge the Democratic incumbent, Sen. Tim Kaine, in November.

In the Democratic Primary for the 11th District of the House of Representatives, Rep. Gerry Connolly handily won with 44 percent of the vote compared to nearly 7 percent for his opponent, Army reservist Ahsan Nasar.

Cao, a retired Navy captain and currently a vice president at CACI International, beat four other candidates to win the June 18 Primary with just over 33 percent of the vote. He raised $2.5 million, far more than any of his opponents.

Kaine’s Senate campaign raised nearly $14.6 million. Kaine has served in the Senate since 2013. He was governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010 and lieutenant governor from 2002 to 2006.

“As your Senator,” Kaine said following the primary, “I’ll keep standing up for an economy that works for all, affordable healthcare, reproductive freedom, enhanced career and technical education, and strengthening our military and allies while supporting our troops, veterans, and their families.”

Cao touted his endorsement from former President Donald Trump. He opposes efforts to curb gun violence, rejects the idea that climate change is caused by human activity, and supports efforts to restrict abortion rights. He believes life begins at conception and refused to state his views on legislation to protect in vitro fertilization.

“President Trump and I will win in November, we will secure the border, we will protect Social Security, and we will save America,” he said. “I spent 25 years fighting for this country, and I’m not done.”

Cao came to the U.S. from Vietnam as a child in 1975 and currently lives in Purcellville.

He served in Navy Special Operations and was deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia before getting involved in politics. In 2022 he ran for the House of Representatives in the 10th District, losing to Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D).

State Sen. Suhas Subramanyam won the Democratic Primary for Wexton’s seat, beating 11 other candidates, including former speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Eileen Filler-Corn, Del. Dan Helmer, Sen. Jennifer Boysko, and former Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni.

Wexton, who is retiring from Congress due to health issues, endorsed Subramanyam.

Mike Clancy won the Republican Primary in the 10th District, beating three challengers. The 10th District covers Loudoun County, Warrenton, Manassas, and a sliver of southwestern Fairfax County.

  1. “Far-right extremist Hung Cao easily” biased much? Why didn’t you write “communist Kaine” or “Far Left Kaine”???

    1. Because Hung Cao’s platform is far more radical than Tim Kaine’s. Tim Kaine is a moderate liberal that maintains the status-quo. Nothing about Tim Kaine is radical.

  2. GO VOTE! Too many have died to give you this right and solemn duty. In the big picture, both the extreme left and right dominate the primaries and who is up for the general election. Unfortunately for the Senate race this year we are stuck with choosing between an ineffective muttonhead incumbent (Kaine), and a completely inexperienced legislative nincompoop (Cao). I will vote but good grief on what we have to choose from.

If that’s not “far-right extremist” what would be? I suspect he likes the label.

  3. Annandale residents wonder where do these candidates stand on the most important issue to them?
    Pickleball…

    1. “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask where you can play pickleball.” (or something like that…)

  4. Hung Cao took the same military oath as I did, to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. How can he support Trump who instigated the insurrectionists to overthrow democracy on January 6th. Shameful. Republicans want an autocratic government and not a democratic government. Wake up people!!!

  5. A lead statement like “far-right extremist” to portray a conservative Asian-heritage citizen…smacks of racisim with political bias mixed in. And this coming from an Annandale publication… very disappointed in the editorial staff that let this portrayal stay in the article. Political bias is not something conveyed in this publication’s writing from my past reading – perhaps they are now taking cues from the far-left bias regularly found in the Falls Church publication!

    1. So, you’re saying it’s racist to call someone a far-right extremist when they are an ethnic minority? Despite their platform matching the far right extremist platforms spouted by the rest of the far right extremists?

    2. Political bias sure, racism, get out of here. If you are going to state that, try providing some context to back up that strong accusation. I see “far-right” or “far-left” used to describe folks of varying race/sex, etc. all the time, it’s rarely accurate and just the current way of scaring folks into voting for the other party.

It’s a website that is voluntarily run, not managed by some corporate entity (from my understanding, if I am wrong, someone please correct me). You aren’t forced to read it and they aren’t required to report with or without bias. Can folks stop complaining about this, there is a very easy solution, ignore it!

  6. The A blog has always swung a bit left, this is nothing new. Don’t like it? Read something else. Ellie is under no obligation to put out there anything she doesn’t want to…

  7. I am very sorry to learn this sad news I have missed seeing Elaine regularly sitting with Bruce at Cafe Louvre I wish all the best to Bruce and family
