Ryan McElveen to headline AHS Just World Festival

McElveen’s Happy New Year tweet.

Popular Fairfax County school board member Ryan McElveen (at large) will be the keynote speaker at the 10th Annual Just World Festival Feb. 27 at Annandale High School.

The free Friday afternoon event features workshops, exhibits, and
entertainment aimed at promoting social activism among youths from the
perspective: “It’s not just your world, it’s ours!” There will be a
marketplace with food and fair-trade items for sale.

McElveen, a 2004 graduate of Marshall High School, is the assistant director of the Brookings Institution’s John L. Thornton China Center.

His tweets about snow days helped him develop a strong rapport with FCPS students. Students began PhotoShopping his bald head on various images, and now McElveen is doing it himself. At last count, he had 41,900 Twitter follows

The Just World Festival is hosted by the Annandale High School Just World Interact Club, which is sponsored by the Annandale Rotary Club. It’s 2:30-5:30 p.m. and is open to the public.

  1. Ryan's popularity plummeted after he failed to stop FCPS from sending students to school earlier this month in hazardous conditions. Having acted as if he were personally responsible for the decision to close schools (which he isn't), he got saddled with responsibility when FCPS made a mistake in keeping them open. It's actually a textbook case in how politicians who try to use social media to their advantage can have it turn on them in a heartbeat. He went from hero to scoundrel in 24 hours, and it's going to take him a long time to regain his "popularity" among students.
