Scott Brabrand named FCPS superintendent

The Fairfax County School Board has selected Scott Brabrand as the finalist for the position of superintendent, pending final approval at the board’s June 8 meeting, Fairfax County Public Schools announced June 1.
Brabrand is superintendent of Lynchburg City Schools in Lynchburg, Va., He previously worked at at FCPS as assistant superintendent, principal of Fairfax High School, assistant principal, associate principal, and teacher.
“Dr. Brabrand’s deep knowledge and understanding of FCPS, coupled with his creative leadership abilities, will ensure FCPS’ continued excellence serving our students, our schools, and our community,”said School Board Chair Sandy Evans (Mason).
“Almost 25 years ago, I fell in love with Fairfax County Public Schools. It is the ultimate honor and privilege to return as a servant-leader for this school system and for the entire Fairfax County community,” said Brabrand.
“FCPS teachers, students, and parents are deeply committed to success and I look forward to harnessing that enthusiasm to continue achieving the high standards set for ourselves,” he said. “It will be critical for me to listen and learn from all our stakeholders to see how we can best work collaboratively to address our challenges and ensure we meet the ever evolving needs of our students and community.”
Brabrand would succeed Steve Lockard, who has served as interim superintendent since Superintendent Karen Garza left in December. Lockard will continue in his role as deputy superintendent.
Brabrand earned a bachelor of science in foreign service degree in international economics from Georgetown University in 1990, and a master’s degree in education from George Washington University. In 2003, he completed his doctoral work in educational leadership and policy from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining FCPS as an employee, he served as volunteer at FCPS while working as assistant manager for Bell Atlantic.
Sounds good, but if he proves to be, I hope he stays around longer than Garza did–instead of using FCPS as merely another rung on his career ladder. Students and staff deserve better than that and my ol' buddy Jack Dale.
Mr. Braband needs to come with a new plan because what has been done in the past is not working. I am sure we all appreciate the necessity of basic educational credentials and experience, but that’s what we’ve always had with FCPS, and it hasn’t worked always. Low teacher and student morale, discipline problems and administrators not being accountable are among the issues that have been raised repeatedly.
