Sears at Landmark is closing

Sears at Landmark Mall.

The Sears store at Landmark Mall, the last store to remain open at the West Alexandria shopping center, is closing.

Sears is advertising a closing sale with “everything priced to sell,” including washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, clothing, bed and bath, housewares, floor care, mattresses, sporting goods, barbecue supplies, tools, and lawn and garden supplies. Jewelry is 70 percent off.

According to news reports, the closure date will depend on when the merchandise and fixtures are sold.
Transformco, the company that owns Sears and Kmart, has been closing stores all over the country. The Sears in Seven Corners closed in April.
Meanwhile, after years of planning, negotiations, and community meetings, the proposal by the Howard Hughes Co. to redevelop Landmark Mall into a large mixed-use town center, appears to be dead. The proposal for the 51-acre property included hundreds of multifamily housing units, retail, entertainment uses, parks, and a new street grid.
The Howard Hughes Co. has been restructured, and City of Alexandria spokesperson Craig Fifer told Bisnow that the company will probably sell the property.
Alexandria City Councilman Canek Aguirre told a community group that Howard Hughes Hughes no longer has any interest in redeveloping Landmark, Alexandria Living magazine reported.
The most recent development approval at the site was in 2015; that expired in 2018, says Maya Contreras of the Alexandria Department of Planning and Zoning. The site went through a replanning process in spring 2019, and the master plan was updated. Planning staff worked with the Howard Hughes team on a rezoning and development special use permit process for the site through the summer and fall. That process is currently paused.
Alexandria still holds out hope that the property will be developed. According to Fifer: “The city is committed to the redevelopment potential of the Landmark Mall site, and remains ready to work with a qualified developer or investor in transforming this site into a vibrant mixed-use community for the city’s West End and beyond.”

  1. Why doesn't the city just blow it up, it is a stupid site with poor access. I was hopeful that Hughes was going to make it a gem and instead its worse than ever. And now nobody wants it. Just another F up by the City of Alexandria and Fairfax County for the West End. Useless political leadership with their brains in their behinds.

    1. Local political leadership is more interested in leftist virtue signaling than doing anything of substance. Residents of NOVA aren't exactly known for having any common sense, so they will keep electing these morons.

  2. i really hope they bring this site back even though others don't fully agree with my thoughts. does anyone know who owns this mall and how to get to them. i have been trying to get a hold of this place to maybe at least visit for the last time
