Spanberger authorizes referendum on redistricting

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger signed legislation passed by the General Assembly calling for referendums on four proposed constitutional amendments on reproductive freedom, marriage equality, voting rights, and mid-decade redistricting.
“Virginia voters deserve the opportunity to respond to the nationwide attacks on our rights, freedoms, and elections,” Spanberger said after signing the legislation on Feb. 6. The redistricting amendment could be put before voters in April. The other amendments will be on the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot.
Mid-decade redistricting (HJ4) – This amendment would authorize the General Assembly to modify one or more congressional districts outside of the standard decennial redistricting cycle. Mid-decade redistricting would only be allowed if any other state takes such action.
A case against the Democrats’ redistricting proposal filed by Republican-backed groups will be heard by the Virginia Supreme Court.
Reproductive freedom (HJ1) – This amendment would ensure the right to make one’s own decisions related to reproductive health care, including access to abortion. The amendment allows the state to place restrictions on access to abortion during the third trimester of pregnancy except when the patient’s life or physical or mental health is at risk or the fetus is not viable.
Marriage equality (SB311) – Repeals the current provision that defines marriage as only a union between one man and one woman. Requires the equal treatment under the law of a lawful marriage between two adult persons regardless of their sex, gender, or race.
Voting rights restoration (HJ2) – Anyone convicted of a felony and released from incarceration would have their right to vote restored automatically without the need for their rights to be restored by action of the governor.
We amended our constitution to require an independent redistricting commission to prevent the proposed map that the Democrats have put forth. It makes no sense that Fairfax County is split into several representative districts. We have interests that differ from the interests of more rural counties we are paired with. I STRONGLY advocate against voting for this constitutional amendment, assuming the VA supreme court doesn’t strike it down first.
Spanberger was publicly against gerrymandering until now that she’s for it. But oh yeah GOP had the majority back then.
Wish these four issues were separated so we’d see what folks really care enough about to get out and vote for or against vs a grab bag with a little tid bit for everyone.
The issues ARE separated.
Redistricting is in April. The other 3 are in November.
I think she was for it when Dems held both houses and Gov mansion in 2020/2021.
Things changed when Trump/Texas did their mid-decade redistricting.
Yes, I was sloppy & missed it. Thanks.
Well, like the rest of us she’s entitled to flop around I guess. In 2019 she was very much against it.
But it’s okay for Texas, right?
Simply pointing out her hypocrisy, but now that you mention it, yes I’d be perfectly happy if she moved to Texas.
