Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin set Sept. 9 as the date for a special election to fill the congressional seat formerly held by Gerry Connolly, who died last month.

The last date to file as a candidate is July 11.

So far, six Democrats, one Republican, and one independent have launched campaigns to represent the 11th District in the House of Representatives.

The Virginia Democrats’ 11th Congressional District Committee will set a date and procedure for selecting a candidate to run in the special election.

“The 11th District Committee is making preparations for a firehouse primary,” said committee chair Manisha Singh. “There will be a process that is fair, transparent, and accessible, as Congressman Gerry Connolly would have wanted.”

Once determined by the 11th Congressional District Committee, the details of the firehouse primary will be published in a call to caucus and advertised to voters.

Democratic voters would vote in-person at several locations in the 11th District, which includes the western part of Annandale.

  1. Hello all the reflex (D) voters, there is an alternative…You don’t have to vote for the party that cares more about lawbreaking migrants more than you. You don’t have to vote for the party that thinks it’s great for a boy to compete against girls in sports. You don’t have to vote for the party whose motto is spend first, worry about the debt later. Consider a different path…

    1. Sure not voting for any candidate that supports Trump who is purposely trying to destroy this country by taking away funding for cancer research, making his billionaire buddies richer, intimidating journalists and law firms, taking funds away from education, continuing to enable dictators, decreased air safety, dismantling consumer protection. The list goes on and on. Not interested in supporting a party that supports Trump who only cares about himself.

    2. Great points – MSM adherents that follow echoing the same tired talking points their party has been pushing for over 8 failing years now. Fewer people are buying it, thank goodness.

    3. Oooooh! Migrants! Trans people! Boogeymen!

Forget about the Constitution, forget about January 6th, forget the Grifter in Chief!

      Ooooh! Boogey men!

  2. You don’t have to vote for the party that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy while vital social programs are underfunded. You don’t have to vote for the party that seeks to restrict access to healthcare and reproductive rights for women. You don’t have to vote for the party whose motto is to cut regulations first, and worry about environmental and social consequences later.

    Consider a different path…
You don’t have to vote for a party that consistently seeks to limit voting rights, making it harder for eligible citizens to participate in our democracy. You don’t have to vote for the party that denies the urgency of climate change, putting future generations at risk. You don’t have to vote for a party that fuels division and fear, rather than seeking common ground and unity.

There’s a path that prioritizes inclusivity, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their background or identity, are treated with dignity and respect. There’s a path that invests in education, infrastructure, and innovation to build a stronger economy for everyone, not just a select few. There’s a path that believes in responsible governance, balancing fiscal prudence with the need to address pressing societal challenges.
