Spice Circle opens in Barcroft Plaza

Spice Circle, a fast-casual restaurant in Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike, had a soft opening on Jan. 10.

Billed as a “modern American grill,” Spice Circle offers BBQ grilled chicken flatbread, Atlantic salmon, baked free-range chicken, butter chicken masala, and other entrees, as well as tacos, sandwiches, truffle fries, and salads. Everything is made with fresh ingredients.

There are also a few Nepali items, reflecting the heritage of owner Deepak Pandey, such as chicken momo, chicken choila (marinated with ginger and garlic), and aloo tama bodi ko tarkari (sauteed bamboo shoots, black-eyed peas, and potato with a lemongrass and cilantro emulsion).

Pandey, the executive chef of the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown, hopes to have a grand opening on Jan. 15. Meanwhile, he’s waiting for delivery of the sign. The storefront still has the sign for the former occupant, Curry N Tandoori.

Spice Circle is open daily, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.

  1. I will be here for the chicken Momos!

There is confusion over the name. The domain is “spicecircleus” and the google business name is spicecircleus, so is it Spice Circle, or Spice Circleus?

    1. I’m sure the “-us” that is befuddling you is merely a reference to the U.S. Perhaps other versions of “Spice Circle” were already taken and they had to get a wee bit creative.

As you can see, their logo puts it simply: Spice Circle. I’m looking forward to checking out their vegetarian offerings.

  2. Annandale is fast becoming quite the restaurant destination. BTW, word is Granddaddy’s Skillet will be hosting comedy nights?

  3. Is Granddaddy’s skillet any good? I was excited for their opening but when I saw food pictures uploaded online, did not pass the eyeball test for me. Anyone actually try it, and have any comments to make?

    1. Yes–it’s pretty good! I’ve enjoyed the mac and cheese, and my husband says the pan-fried fish is amazing. The breading and the spices were just right– light but really flavorful at the same time. They didn’t overpower the fish itself.

The sides are good, especially the yams. The lemon pound cake, though a little dry, was still really tasty. (Don’t ask me how they did that!)

The seasoned rice is the only let down; the one time I tried it I couldn’t taste anything but rice.

We’re not huge soul food fans, so it’s been a long time, but we’ll definitely go back. We’ll order online to reduce our wait time.

Grandaddy, by the way, is not a fictitious gimmick, but the Pittsburgh patriarch whose recipes inspired the menu. It’s a genuine family-owned business.

  4. Just went there yesterday! I ordered the aloo tama tarkari, few crispy momos and butter chicken flatbread, it was DELICIOUS!! Also, the portions are huge which makes you full. Love the hospitality from the owners, super genuine and great service in general. Would recommend 100%, it’s nice to be supporting new business during this hard time. Thanks for recommending this place!

  5. We ordered takeout from there tonight—a few fried rice dishes and the momo dumplings. All fresh/delicious food and really friendly staff on site. Will definitely go back again!
