St. Ambrose in Annandale named a national ‘Blue Ribbon School’

Congratulations to St. Ambrose Catholic School in Annandale, Va., for being named a 2010 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Education Department.
The school, at 3827 Woodburn Road, serves just 210 students in kindergarten through the eighth grade and is associated with St. Ambrose Catholic Parish. Saint Ambrose’s mission statement says the school “is dedicated to academic excellence, committed to the formation of the whole child, and rooted in the traditions and ideals of the Catholic faith.”
The Blue Ribbon program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools whose students achieve at very high levels or have made significant progress and helped close gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority students.

Of the 304 schools designated as Blue Ribbon Schools Sept. 9, just nine are in Virginia and none of them is a Fairfax County public school. In 2009, two public schools in the Annandale area were designated—Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology and Graham Road Elementary School. In 2008 another Catholic School in Annandale, Holy Spirit School, achieved Blue Ribbon status.
