Stream restoration project to start soon in Wakefield Park

Erosion on Accotink Creek in Wakefield Park.
Construction is expected to begin this month on a stream restoration project along the main branch of Accotink Creek and a secondary channel at Wakefield Park.

The project will restore 4,878 linear feet of Accotink Creek west of the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail north of Braddock Road.

This is a pilot project that will employ a unique design approach to trap sediment and achieve restoration objectives, including stream stabilization, water quality improvement, aquatic and riparian habitat enhancement, and reconnection of the channel and its floodplain.

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services has contracted with Avon Corp. to carry out the work.

When the work starts, construction traffic will enter and exit the project area via an existing trail connection to the Cross County Trail.

Wakefield Park will remain open for the duration of the project. However, for safety reasons, temporary closure of the natural surface trail adjacent to the project is necessary until the work is completed in July 2021.
