Stuart students can start thinking about a new mascot

JEB Stuart High School students and eighth-graders at Glasgow Middle School will be involved in the process to select a new mascot for Stuart.

The Fairfax County School Board voted on Oct. 26 to rename the school Justice High School. At the same time, the board directed Superintendent Scott Brabrand to propose a plan for implementing the name change.

Brabrand is expected to share the details and logistics of the plan at the board’s Dec. 11 work session.

Meanwhile, Brabrand asked Gros to lead the school through a mascot selection process.

Students will have an opportunity to make suggestions for a new mascot through a Google form, Stuart Principal Penny Gros says in a Nov. 27 email to the Stuart community. All appropriate suggestions will be shared with the student body. Students will then discuss ideas for a new mascot name and image during “Raider Time.” Rising ninth-graders at Glasgow will have an opportunity to participate during “Panther Time.”

“It is my expectation that this process will be conducted in a manner that allows positive student engagement and pride in their school’s new name,” Gros says.

  1. How about "The Justice Magistrates"? The mascot will be an oversized figure of a person dressed in a judicial robe and wearing a powered wig. – Sparky

  2. I think we should just stick with "Raiders." It allows that traditional name and pride in it to be carried on while also paying homage to the military unit that Col. Mendez (one of school's new honorees) led in the Korean War.

    1. John Marshall HS in Richmond are the "Marshall Justices," but the "Justice Marshals" here would be at odds with the stated intent to honor not only Justice Thurgood Marshall, but also Barbara Rose Johns and Col. Louis G. Mendez.

  3. That’s what I like… but I’m also looking forward to the kids really taking thr lead on this, with the only outside influence being used to remove obviously stupid names (no schooly mcschoolface)

  4. Students are nominating their choices now. Nominations will close Monday December 4. Then, they begin the voting to narrow the choices down.

    1. I hope some of them opt for "Justice League". That choice would provide some really distinctive options for a mascot. – Sparky
