Summer youth program focuses on community issues, social justice

The National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC) is launching a  summer program for high school students aimed
at educating youths about community issues and developing progressive leaders
among the Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Participants
in the first-ever Summer Youth Empowerment Program – about 10-15 youths –
will meet three days a week from July 5 to Aug. 11 at the NAKASEC office in
Annandale. The program will include discussions and activities focused on
social justice topics, such as immigration, identity, AAPI issues, gender, and
civic participation.

On Tuesdays
and Wednesdays, the sessions will feature guest speakers, discussions, and
workshops. Thursdays are designated for interactive activities including field
trips to D.C. Throughout the five-week camp, students will organize a community
advocacy project on a social issue of their choice.

Although the program primarily focuses on issues affecting
the AAPI community, students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds are invited
to apply. Applicants must be in or entering high school or a recent graduate. Preference
will be given to youths with a low-income or immigrant background.

“The Summer Youth Empowerment Program is
unique in that it will focus on and provide opportunities for students to
engage in social justice and AAPI topics not commonly explored or addressed in
high schools,” said Sae Hee Chun, campaign coordinator at NAKASEC’s Annandale
office. “We hope that through this program, students
become empowered to become active agents of social change.”

The
participant fee is $50. The application will be online through May 29.
