The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on July 14 approved a zoning special exception for a childcare center on Fairland Street, Lincolnia, next to the Braddock Road intersection, to serve up to 50 children.

The applicant and property owner, Deyi Awadallah, initially requested that the center accommodate up to 99 children.

An existing single-family house on the lot will be replaced with a 5,355-square-foot building. Little Beginners Daycare will be located between Thomas Jefferson High School and Weyanoke Elementary School.

The project includes an outdoor play area and a parking lot in front of the building with 11 spaces. The applicant agreed to construct a 6-foot-wide sidewalk along the property frontage on Fairland Street and Braddock Road.

The childcare center would be open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekdays and would host occasional evening family events to end by 7 p.m.

Both the Planning Commission and the Mason District Land Use Committee had endorsed the project.

At the Board of Supervisors hearing, Karl Ensign, president of the Lincolnia Park Civic Association, urged the board to pause approval of the project until traffic and parking issues can be resolved.

He said there are already bottlenecks on Fairland Street and questioned whether 11 parking spaces are enough.

A representative of Awadallah said parents won’t park at the center. They will drop off their children, and a staff member will escort them to the building.
