SweetFrog fro-yo shop opens in Annandale
SweetFrog, a frozen yogurt shop, had a soft opening on June 7 in the Annandale Shopping Center on Columbia Pike – just in time for summer weather.
Franchise owner Nabil Hindi wants the shop to become a community gathering place; he added outdoor seating to bring people together.
SweetFrog offers customizable treats. Customers choose a cup size; fill it with soft-serve frozen yogurt, ice cream, or sorbet, and choose as many toppings as they want. The price is determined by weight.
There are about 15 flavors, such as strawberry-mango, pineapple-coconut, low-fat cake batter, nonfat blue cotton candy, no-sugar-added cheesecake, and vanilla.
There are dozens of toppings, including nuts, sprinkles, fruit, candy bits, jelly beans, poppers, cookie pieces, and gummies.
Korean immigrant Derek Cha opened the first SweetFrog in Richmond in 2009. He founded the company on Christian principles, with the “frog” part of the name standing for “fully rely on God.”
Cha sold the company in 2018 to a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Canadian MTY Food Group. There are now more than 300 locations in the United States and others across the globe.
A rash of these opened a decade ago, and a lot of froyo shops closed down after the fad. Surprised we are seeing another one open this late in the game.
looking forward to this opening! we have missed Sweet Frog.
This is marvelous! I was so sad when somebody the nearby shops closed. I’m glad we are getting one back!
Yeah, I remember when Red Mango and Pinkberry were everywhere. But even though that bubble burst, hopefully this one does well!
