Temple proposed for house on Gallows Road

A temple is proposed for this property at the corner of Gallows Road and Trammell Road.

The Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals is considering an application for the operation of a Buddhist temple in a single-family house at 3528 Gallows Road in Annandale.

The application was submitted by Van Duc Tu. Places of worship are allowed in residential areas zoned R-2, but they need a special permit from the BZA.

The BZA hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18. The staff report, expected to be published Sept. 11, will look at proposed exterior and interior modifications to the house, the impact on transportation, and related issues.

  1. It's been operating as such without benefit of a permit for months. Thank you Fairfax County zoning enforcement…where the inspectors have never met a violation they did not love.

  2. I agree that they have been operating without a permit for months. They have cut down trees, and already made modifications to the outside of the house. I also agree that I have seen little or no enforcement of zoning violations in neighborhoods. I would think that there would be some consideration of the fact that they started operating long before the application was submitted (but probably not).

  3. This house is at the corner of a major point of entry/exit for my neighborhood. The study that looks at potential impacts on traffic had better take that into consideration.

Watching the tree removal there broke my heart.

  4. With all of the vacant retail and office space in this county, you'd think that the people running these temples would want to set up shop there. I don't understand why they are doing this in neighborhoods.

    1. Its because they dont respect their neighbors and they are looking for inexpensive opportunities at the expense of running down the neighborhood. What kind of religion is this that would cause so much trouble. They need to move their temple to a commercial/institutional district or go back home to where they came from. Enough is enough, just say NO!

    2. I agree when they are expending their worship to public without a permit is improper. To your commend "go back home to where they came from", well, the Native of American people do have more right than YOU to say that to You, EU people and other countries (over here is not one nation one people/race). Do you understand the meaning of United State of America?

  5. Why is it that these temples are popping up all over neighborhoods? They then submit for permits well after they've been operating. When will the County start enforcing laws and say "no" when this happens?

    1. I agree completely. We have seen similar situations all around the area. Does anyone know if the illegal temple on Ravensworth was approved or not? All sorts of permit shennigans going on there. Sounds like another examples of the same thing. If enough people complain to the Board they should start paying more attention, esp. with an election year coming up.

  6. I can think of worse neighbors to have; temples probably don't cause lots of noise or crime. Plus they bought the house so I don't have a problem with it. The renovations are honestly better than about half of the additions/mcmansions people are building on around here.

Curious whether these residential conversions continue to pay taxes on the residential property?

  7. I can confirm there are 20+ cars parked in the grass and newly created parking lots over the weekends… 2 weeks ago on Sunday there were 35+ cars parked on the grass…

  8. Whom can we contact about this? I'm about to go on vacation and won't have time to search through the Zoning Appeals website. (Perhaps there are more direct routes to the right desks?) I might attend the hearing, but I'd definitely write or call.

Before I'm blitzed by the gripers who love to hang here: I know my/our voices might not be heard or heeded, but I GUARANTEE the people in power aren't reading this blog! (Sorry, Ellie.)

  9. Unleash a nest of wasps, that always seems to do the trick. You'll be dead by the time zoning does anything.

  10. Another stupid thing that FFC will do; therefore no taxes on this property. We end up paying for them. FFC, you are going to hell in hand basket.

  11. Don't even bother wasting your time to research. I have made zoining complaint since last August. Finally a repeat again in January. Here it is June. A nice person sent them an email and added me to the cc list. Guess what that was two months ago and no response from FFC. They won't do anything. Too scared. No response from my email either. Shameful for what we pay in taxes to get little to nothing. What a joke.

  12. The public hearing is set for November 20, 2019 at 9am in the Government Center. Suggest anyone who is opposed/concerned, to at ,contact Penny Gross and voice your objections; and attend the public hearing as well.
