The Annandale community got a taste of Bulgaria Saturday
evening as the group Lyuti Chushki performed at Bulgarian Cultural Night at
Ossian Hall Park.

Lyuti Chushki means “hot peppers” in Bulgarian, and as a
handout from the group says, “you can’t have a feast without them.” The group
has been playing at weddings, festivals, and parties since 1997.

The band consists of Valeri Georgriev on kaval (flute),
Boril Peychinov on accordion, vocalist Tzvety Weiner, and Larry Weiner on tupan
(a large drum).

Audience members, including some Bulgarians who came from
Maryland for the show, joined in with traditional Bulgarian dances. One of the
group’s favorite songs is about a woman who’s as enticing but also as difficult
as a hot pepper.

There are cultural heritage shows every Saturday, 7:30-8:30
p.m., all summer long at Ossian Hall Park. The next show, June 25, features the
music of Taiwan.

Those shows are part of the Mason District Spotlight by Starlight series, as are the free outdoor concerts every Sunday, Wednesday, and
Friday, 7:30 p.m., at the amphitheater in Mason District Park.

The concert series
also includes occasional children’s shows Saturdays at 10 a.m. The next one
features the Grandsons Jr. on June 25. They’re the kids version of the popular roots/rock
band, the Grandsons.

Several members of my family have been to the park for a variety of shows, and have enjoyed it every single time. It's kind of like a teeny-tiny Wolf Trap right here at home–and it's free!
