Traffic delays expected as traffic shifted to new Braddock Road bridge
You might want to avoid the Braddock Road bridge over the beltway on Thursday – and possibly for the next few months. VDOT will shift the westbound lanes to the new bridge beginning at 9:30 a.m. on May 27, with the traffic shift expected to be completed by 3:30 p.m. The following week, on or about June 3, eastbound lanes of traffic will be shifted overnight to the new bridge.
For the next 14-18 months, motorists will have two eastbound lanes over the bridge with a temporary traffic signal from I-495 south to Braddock Road remaining in place. Motorists traveling westbound will have two through-lanes and one merge-lane. The temporary traffic signal from I-495 north to Braddock Road will be removed and motorists will now merge onto Braddock Road west via the merge lane.
Once all traffic is on the new bridge, night work begins to demolish the old bridge. There will be lane closures and detours in this area throughout the spring and summer. Once the demolition is complete, work will begin to rebuild a new eastbound Braddock Road bridge.
