Two community events for social justice in Annandale on June 8

The Annandale community is invited to two marches on Monday, June 8, in support of racial justice and Black Lives Matter.

June 8 marks the two-week anniversary of the death of George Floyd, who died after a police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

There will be march and gathering at 4 p.m. on Monday, beginning in the Kmart parking lot, 4221 John Marr Drive in Annandale. Participants are advised to wear face coverings and bring water.
A family-friendly march, organized by several Mason Crest Elementary School families, including Ricardy Anderson, who represents Mason District on the Fairfax County School Board, starts at 7 p.m. at Barcroft Plaza on Columbia Pike.
The group will march to the Mason District Government Center for a moment of silence, songs of unity, and brief speeches from community members. Children are invited to contribute readings or thoughts to the group of one minute or less.
Participants are asked to wear masks, practice social distancing, and “bring PG-rated signs, water, peace, and a desire to educate our children on police accountability, peaceful community activism, racial justice, and equality.”
