Upper Bailey’s Elementary School on target to open in September

The new Upper Bailey’s Elementary School will be open on
time for the start of the school year, although there might be a few little
odds and ends to wrap up, said John Goldman, the nighttime
supervisor with the main contractor, the John C. Grimberg Co.

Work is underway with double shifts to complete the
conversion of an office building at 6245 Leesburg Pike in Seven Corners into
Fairfax County’s first urban-design school. The new school will relieve severe
overcrowding at Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences, which has
19 trailers to deal with the overflow. During the 2014-15 school year, Bailey’s
will have grades preK-2, while grades 3-5 will be moved to the new building.
The basic work on the interior of the building is done,
said Goldman. The plumbing and electrical work is mostly completed. The floor
tiles are in. The rooftop AC units are up. Coat racks and cabinets in the
classrooms and bookshelves in the library have been installed, and kitchen
equipment have been installed in the cafeteria. Some of the items still not in place
include a three-bay sink in the kitchen, carpeting, and exterior blocks at the teachers’
entrance.
