VDOT announces repaving plans

During its annual road paving program for Fairfax County, the Virginia Department of Transportation plans to repave several roads in the Annandale/Mason District area, including the following:

  • Annandale Road between Little River Turnpike and Wayne Drive, Annandale.
  • The beltway between Braddock Road and I-395.
  • Birch Lane, Lincolnia.
  • Blundell Circle, Falls Church.
  • Brush Drive, Falls Church.
  • Chatelain Road, Annandale.
  • Edsall Road between Shawnee Road and I-395, Lincolnia.
  • Gary Court, Falls Church.
  • Grenstead Street, Falls Church.
  • Hockett Street, Falls Church.
  • John Marr Drive between Columbia Pike and Backlick Road.
  • Headrow Lane, Falls Church.
  • Hickory Court, Falls Church.
  • Hill Drive/Statecrest Drive, Annandale.
  • Holly Berry Court, Free Hollow Drive, and Pathway Court in the Holmes Run Acres neighborhood.
  • Ivy Crest Place, Annandale.
  • Kenfig Place between Locker Street and Wayne Road, Falls Church.
  • Pine Road between Birch Lane and Braddock Road, Lincolnia.
  • Sheffield Court, Falls Church.
  • Spring Valley Road between Birch Lane and Braddock Road, Lincolnia.
  • Tunlaw Street, Lincolnia.

The paving will begin this spring and conclude in November 2025. Exact work dates will be available approximately 10 days before the work starts. In subdivisions, “no parking” signs with precise date information will be posted at least three business in advance.

Crews typically work on neighborhood streets on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents might need to move cars, basketball hoops, and garbage cans during repaving.

Related story: A ‘road diet’ would make Annandale Road safer

VDOT collaborates with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to improve traffic safety as part of the repaving effort, such as new crosswalk markings and bike lanes. This year, however, no new improvements are scheduled for Annandale/Mason District.

FCDOT has previously proposed a “road diet” along Annandale Road between Little River Turnpike and Gallows Road. The project called for reducing the number of travel lanes from four to three to make room for bike lanes and a center turn lane. VDOT approved the road diet between Markham Street and Galanis Drive.

FCDOT might extend the road diet to other intersections in the future if funding is available. The results of a survey on the project are available here.

Another road diet was previously proposed for John Marr Drive between Columbia Pike and Backlick Road. VDOT reduced it to 700 feet eastward from Backlick.

  1. All the road diet will do is increase congestion, accidents, and create more problems. Maybe you can lead by example by having all who propose this use the opportunity to walk, bicycle, ride the buses and give up your cars. I know you will not and this is hypocrisy. Ok for us not for you.

    1. You aren’t kidding! If I were to take the bus to visit my mom, it would take me 8 times longer to get there. If I were to accompany her to church, I might as well spend Saturday night with her to make the trips worthwhile. Oh–wait. At 90+ years, she’s not up to all that walking, and hills are a hard “No.” It’ll have to be an e-bicycle built for two, I guess. Hang on tight, Mom!

  2. I hope VDOT has elected a new contract. I’ve ruined 4 tires in exposed gas caps, sewer holes and it’s impossible to fight the contractors insurance company.

  3. The road diet plan from 236 to Gallows on Annandale Road is an extremely bad idea. Anyone who has been at the Gallows and Annandale Road intersection during morning rush hour will know that the number of cars (using both lanes, not the proposed one lane) often have a difficult time getting through the light. This will cause more people to just run the light (going both directions) and make the entire road less safe than before. I cannot believe that we need more bike lanes since they are not used extensively now. Wake up, BoS and realize that we are not Holland – we are not going to go to using bikes everywhere. Keep our roads safe.

  4. Thank you for VDOT effort for their continuous effort to improve road and transportation architecture. I live on Whitman Road. I our road was paved but they have not taken care of two pipe stands for past 39 yrs. It is cracked. Walkway is cracked. Community has aged community. There is Fall Risk.
Please call me at (703) 629-3908. Subhash Paradkar, 3827 Whitman Road, Annandale, VA 22003. Pot Holes are a continuous problems. Need to cut trees that protrude on to streets. We have trimming law in VA since 2007. HOAs have not implemented any ordinances or compile with Statutory requirements. Local residents pay taxes but roads are used by many people who do not pay taxes or due to massive influx of undocumented workers or migrant labor. We need tax benefits proportional to our taxes. Thanks.
