Virginia is having a tax holiday Aug. 1-3

Planning to buy a home appliance or generator? If you can hold off for a bit, you’ll be able to get it tax-free.

Virginia’s annual sales tax holiday, Aug. 1-3, covers school supplies, clothing, emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star™ WaterSense™ products.

The tax holiday starts on 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Qualifying items for the sales tax holiday include the following:

  • Qualified school supplies – $20 or less per item. Examples include bookbags, notebooks, and art supplies.
  • Qualified clothing and footwear – $100 or less per item. The list includes shirts, pants, dresses, underwear, uniforms, and much more.
  • Portable generators – $1,000 or less per item. 
  • Gas-powered chainsaws – $350 or less per item.
  • Chainsaw accessories – $60 or less per item. 
  • Other specified hurricane preparedness items – $60 or less per item.  
  • Qualifying Energy Star™ or WaterSense™ products purchased for home use – $2,500 or less per item. The list includes dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners, showerheads, toilets, and more.
