Virginia sales tax holiday this weekend

Virginia is having its annual sales tax holiday this weekend.

You can buy certain school supplies, clothing, emergency preparedness supplies, and energy-saving and water-saving products without paying state sales taxes. Purchases can be made in person, online, or by phone.

The “tax holiday” starts Friday, Aug. 6, at 12:01 a.m. and ends Sunday, Aug. 8, at 11:59 p.m. 

These items are tax-free this weekend:

  • School supplies – $20 or less per item.
  • Clothing and footwear – $100 or less per item.
  • Portable generators – $1,000 or less per item.
  • Gas-powered chainsaws – $350 or less per item.
  • Chainsaw accessories – $60 or less per item. 
  • Other specified hurricane preparedness products – $60 or less per item.
  • Appliances and other products with an ENERGY STAR™ or WaterSense™ label purchased for personal use – $2,500 or less per item.
