If Annandale looks cleaner, it’s because more than 50 people
showed up on a beautiful spring morning April 12 to take part in the annual
Annandale Cleanup organized by Helen Winter, chair of the beautification committee for the Annandale Central Business District Planning Committee. [In some places, the first “C” stands for “commercial” in the name of the committee, which
seems a little redundant.]

The volunteers included boy scouts from Troop 150, residents
of Evergreen House, members of the Korean Metropolitan Business Association,
people in the Community Labor Force, and families and individuals from Annandale who care
about our community.

After meeting at the George Mason Regional Library parking lot to
collect bright orange trash bags, vests, gloves, water, and donuts, the
volunteers went to work in Poe Terrace Park and along Little River Turnpike,
Evergreen Lane, and Columbia Pike. Among their finds: a bookcase, mattress, baseball,
tricycle, beer bottles, lots of fast food trash and cigarette butts—and a snow
shovel. Won’t be needing that for a while.
