Volunteers needed for Americana Drive cleanup

Volunteers collect trash on American Drive in 2018.

Americana Drive
in Annandale is a magnet for litter and discarded construction debris, but
periodic cleanups help keep the trash from overwhelming the area between the
road and the beltway sound wall.

The next cleanup
is scheduled for Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 10 a.m.-noon.

Local residents
and anyone who wants to get some fresh air and exercise while helping to make
the community nicer is encouraged to volunteer. Sign up here

The cleanup
event is hosted by the Fairfax County Restoration Project and the Friends of AccotinkCreek.

    1. I couldn't agree more. I have the misfortune of living in Vistas. The people here are absolutely disgusting.

  1. No doubt this area has had its challenges. But characterizing people as "crap" is part of the us vs them vitriol. The problems in this community are layered and complicated and there are many reasons for them. Many residents have lived here for years. This is a forgotten part of the county and some of the hardest working people in the county live here. So in case your mother didn't teach you, if you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all. Or better yet, join the group on Wednesday and pitch in to help make it better…

    1. Cleaning up the litter and construction debris won't change the crap that lives in the area. They will continue to dump their trash and bring down the neighborhood even further.

  2. I use to live at the charles E Smith Apartments now the Vista, and my apartment faced American Dr. I dont think that the residents are the ones trashing Americana Dr!! AND I AM NOT CRAP!!!

    1. Now that we got rid of the hillbilly crap out of the White House, it's time for the Dems to get serious about filtering what crap ends up in our neighborhoods. Under both parties we have illegals and non-conforming immigrants pouring into the US showing a total disregard for our laws, our communities and our way of life. Are all immigrants guilty of this, certainly not, but there are enough that make it bad for all. In many of our Mason District neighborhoods one can easily identify an immigrant home: disheveled yards, cars all over the place and on front lawns, general deferred maintenance, tree elimination, unkempt curbsides and inappropriate disposal of trash. Is this a generalization, yes but I encourage each of you to take the test and I guarantee that you will you come up with the same results. Are there whites that do this too, of course, just a much lesser number.

Being an American and and owning a home is not a right, but a responsibility to neighbors and community. I believe if newcomers cannot love our country, our freedoms and our environment then they should go back home and keep their intrinsic bad habits in their native lands.

One example to turn this perception around would be for newcomers to take a leading effort to clean up after themselves and their neighborhoods. That may be the best weapon to disprove this hypothesis and to gain acceptance in their new land.

Living in the US is a privilege and not an entitlement.

    2. Wow is right – 'hill billy crap from the white house;' – that's a good one, calling a guy from Queens NY a hill billy. Good luck waiting for the 'Dems' to 'filter.' Don't know if you've noticed, but 'Dems' are in charge of this type of law in Fairfax County, not the White House. They have been for years and group houses have proliferated. I think you will find that the new regime will make the type of behavior you cite above a bit easier, since all their policies make immigration easier. I have three such homes on my street; the open screen doors signaling vacancies, the cars with expired or out of state tags filling the street frontage, driveways, and back yards, piles of mattresses every time someone moves out that sit on the street for weeks, all mature trees long since removed. This isn't an issue on the President of the United State's radar. Take it up with the local authorities who are letting it happen.

  3. Lot's of interesting comments. My thoughts after reading them: if you vote Democrat, open your eyes and look what you are doing to our neighborhoods; if you vote Republican, get a spine and speak up!!!

    1. I don't think either party cares, because they all live in toni neighborhoods where they don't see or feel the pain. It is up to local politicians to make a difference. And the current leadership is clueless. That leaves Mason to default to the lowest common denominator.

  4. Trash & dumping are not a Republican or Democrat issue folks. A construction landfill was closed, and going out to West OX is a problem at the end of a long work day. I'll bet the dumpers have mixed political leanings. Had VDOT not cleared the vegetation there this would never have happened. This is an opportunistic circumstance not a political one.
