Voting underway for the primaries

Voting in the primaries is underway at the Fairfax County Government Center.

Early voting for the Democratic and Republican primaries started on May 3. Both primaries are on June 18.

Several candidates for the Senate and U.S. House of Representatives are on the primary ballots.

Voting at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax, and two other locations in Alexandria and Reston is available through June 15. Check the schedule here.

Thirteen more locations open for early voting June 8-June 15, including the Mason Government Center and Thomas Jefferson Library.

Here’s the rundown on the candidates:

Democratic Primary

in the 11th Congressional District, Ahsan Nasar is challenging longtime incumbent Rep. Gerry Connolly. Nasar is a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and a military lawyer.

Only two precincts in Mason District – Camelot and Ridgelea – are in the 11th district.

Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Don Beyer (8th District) do not have primary opponents and therefore are officially the Democratic nominees and will be on Nov. 5 ballot.

Republican Primary

Four candidates are vying for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Tim Kaine in November:

  • Hung Cao – a retired Navy captain, resident of Purcellville.
  • Jonathan Emord – a constitutional lawyer, lives in Clifton.
  • Eddie Garcia – an Army veteran.
  • Scott Parkinson – a military veteran and attorney.
  • Chuck Smith – a former aide to three U.S. senators, lives in Arlington.

There is no Republican Primary for the 11th or 8th congressional districts, as there is only one candidate for each district.

Jerry Torres will be on the ballot in November in the 11th district. Mike Van Meter is challenging Rep. Don Byer in the 8th district.
