White supremacist gets two years for hateful graffiti

Mahone [FCPD]

Dylan Mahone, the Nazi sympathizer who pleaded guilty to spray-painting racist and anti-Semitic graffiti on the Northern Virginia Jewish Community Center and Little River United Church of Christ in April 2017, was sentenced to 21 months in jail Dec. 14, according to reports on WTOP and NBC4.

Meanwhile, no one has been arrested for spray painting anti-Semitic graffiti on the JCC on Oct. 6. That incident is under investigation, police say.

Mahone, who was living with his parents in the Camelot neighborhood at the time of his arrest, pleaded guilty in October to three counts of felony destruction of property, one count of using a swastika with the intent to intimidate, and one count of wearing a mask in public to conceal one’s identity.

In addition to jail time, Fairfax Circuit Judge Jan Brodie ordered Mahone to serve eight years of active probation, carry out 200 hours of community service, undergo a psychological evaluation, stay 500 feet away from all affected properties, maintain employment or a combination of school and employment, and pay nearly $7,000 in restitution.

He was arrested in April 2017 after a surveillance video captured him painting swastikas and phrases that included “Hitler was right” on the JCC. He also painted hateful messages, including “Defend America; No Muslims,” at Little River United Church of Christ on Little River Turnpike in Annandale and posted anti-Semitic flyers at Northern Virginia Community College in March 2017.

Mahone was unrepentant when he was arrested, according to NBC4. When police asked him if he had a message for his victims, he said, “Heil Hitler. No regrets.”

“I still don’t hear an apology from you to the people you have harmed,” Brodie told Mahone during the sentencing hearing. “I can rehabilitate people on drugs. I don’t know that I can rehabilitate people who hate. That requires a change of heart. That’s something you have to work through yourself.”
