Woodley Pool celebrates 60th anniversary

Sunday night is raft night at the Woodley Pool.

Members of the Woodley Recreation Association celebrated the
pool’s 60th anniversary with a DJ, pizza, beer, cake, and balloon animals at an end-of-summer party Sept. 6. The
pool, on Camp Alger Avenue, is in the Broyhill Park neighborhood in the Falls
Church area of Mason District.

In an area where many local pools struggling to maintain members, the
Woodley Pool is exceptional. Membership is the highest it’s been in the last
few years, says Mary Van Wijngaarden, vice president of the pool board. The Woodley
Pool has so many members – 354 families this year – that the board has stopped registering new ones and is starting a waiting list.
Van Wijngaarden attributes the increased membership to
several factors: More young families are moving into the Broyhill Park and
Westlawn neighborhoods; the pool’s new website is attracting lots of interest;
people from the other side of Route 50 are joining Woodley because many of the
pools in that area are full; and the pool has one of the lowest membership
rates in the area.
What makes the Woodley Pool so nice, says Ron Massaro, a
Broyhill Park resident and former pool board member, is the family-friendly
atmosphere and its huge covered pavilion. He calls the pool “a refuge for the
neighborhood.”
