Woodson fire causes $8 million in damages
Investigators with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department estimated the fire on the Woodson High School campus Jan. 30 caused more than $8.85 million in damages.
The two-alarm fire was accidental and started in an office in an administrative building next to the school. Woodson is located at 9525 Main Street in Fairfax.

“The exact cause of the fire will be classified as undetermined,” the FCFRD states.
Area residents saw smoke coming from the building and called 911. The building’s local fire alarm did activate.
Firefighters started working on the fire inside the building. “After observing minimal improvements, and cracks forming in the exterior brick wall, crews quickly transitioned to an outside, defensive operation,” the FCFRD reports. The fire was brought under control in approximately two hours but it took several more hours to tackle the numerous hot spots.
