Workshops focus on helping eligible people apply for property tax relief

by Mason Supervisor Penny Gross in collaboration with the Fairfax County
Department of Tax Administration.
At the workshops, scheduled for March 4 and 6, 9 a.m.-noon, county staff will help residents complete the
tax relief application. No appointment is necessary.
Tax relief is available to people age 65 or older or
permanently and totally disabled, and meet certain income requirements.
If a
homeowner’s gross income from all sources, along with the income of any
relatives who live in the house, is $52,000 or less, the homeowner can seek 100
percent exemption from real estate taxes. A homeowner meeting the above qualifications but has an
income between $52,000 and $62,000 can seek 50 percent tax relief. An income
between $62,000 and $72,000 can qualify an eligible homeowner for 25 percent
tax relief.
