Yoga workshops and classes offered

Yoga for kids.
For those of you who wish there was still a yoga studio in
Annandale, there are other options.
Annandale resident Cathy Burke, an experienced, registered
yoga teacher, teaches several types of yoga classes at nearby locations.
On Sunday, Jan. 8, Burke is leading a family yoga workshop
for children ages 3-9 with an adult, at JOURNEYoga just a few miles away in Arlingon
(2501 9th Road, South, Suite 95), at 2:45 p.m.

The same family yoga workshop will be offered Sunday, Jan. 22,
11 a.m., at Feels Like Om in Springfield (6116 Rolling Road, Suite 301).

Burke’s family yoga workshop is guided by the “niyama of tapas,” a yoga practice that focuses
on self-discipline.

“As a symbol of new
beginnings, abundance, and prosperity, we will use the theme of the dragon to
explore this concept and apply it through our practice,” Burke says. “You and
your child will explore movement as individuals and with the group as we mimic
the breath and actions of dragons, and apply their symbolism through intention.”
On Jan. 16, Martin Luther
King Day, Burke will offer a Kids Yoga Staycation Mini-Retreat at Ease Yoga & Café in Del Ray, Alexandria (3051 Mt. Vernon Ave.). This four-hour
session (11 a.m.-3 p.m.) will be filled with learning,
creating, and moving that will provide kids age 7-12 with “better body
awareness, nutritional understanding, well-being, and just plain fun,” Burke
says.
Burke will lead “MELT,” a
yin-inspired daytime mini-retreat for adults on Friday, Jan. 27, 12:30-2:45
p.m., at JOURNEYoga in Arlington.
“MELT is a small, special gathering that will allow you to connect and relax
on a deeper level,” she says. “Expect slow, deep, supported asana, quiet
connection, guided meditation/nidra and extended savasana with aromatherapy.
Each member of our group will feel supported, connected, and deeply relaxed.”
Participants are invited to arrive early for tea, treats, and conversation.
Burke has been teaching yoga for the past 10 years. She
started doing yoga in high school following a series of losses. She found yoga
helped her work through the strong emotions she was feeling and later to
balance the stresses and joys of day-to-day life.
While she teaches various types of yoga, Burke specialized
in the vinyasa style, a flowing practice where the postures are connected with
movement and breath. The family sessions are more like yoga games and stories,
with parents and children sharing the experience together.
In addition to the special workshops listed above, Burke
teaches weekly yoga classes Sunday evenings at JOURNEYoga at 6:15 p.m.,
followed by a slower candlelight yoga and meditation session at 7:30.
