Amazon Fresh to open in Bailey’s Crossroads

The former Safeway spot at the Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads is going to be an Amazon Fresh grocery store, according to a reliable source, rather than an Amazon Go store, as had been speculated in a previous blog post.

Construction is expected to start in March, and the store could open in late 2022.

The store will be nearly 40,000 square feet, leaving another 21,000 square feet available for another tenant.

Amazon Fresh stores offer national brands, as well as Whole Foods’ 365 brand and prepared foods. Amazon also owns the Whole Foods chain.

Under Amazon Fresh’s Dash Cart concept, customers will be able to skip the checkout line. The store’s overhead cameras scan items in the Dash Cart, and the customer is automatically charged when exiting the store through the Dash Cart line.

Shoppers can use the Amazon app to order items in advance and can ask Alexa to help them find items while they shop.

Amazon Fresh stores are bigger than Amazon Go stores. Amazon Fresh stores are reportedly in the works for Franconia and Fairfax. There are four Amazon Fresh stores in California and one in Illinois, with more planned for those states. Two Amazon Go stores are planned for D.C.

  1. I don't know how by 2022 drones won't be shopping the aisles for us which would actually be a throwback to the original general store model when the shopkeepers had grocery inventory behind their counters.

  2. I noticed that the sign at the Crossroads Center has been taken down. I hope it’s still coming. Any info?
