Annandale locations showcase powerful creative expression

By James Albright
Two noteworthy art experiences will hit Annandale in the next couple of weeks.
A new Artopolis show at Beanetics highlights stunning mixed-media and collage works by Theresa Martin, while renowned DC Comics artist Matt Johnston applies his mural skills to Flavor Hive, our new hot dining spot.
These two events highlight the ever-changing art scene in Annandale and reflect the dynamism that our community attracts.

Artopolis
Theresa Martin’s work will be exhibited at Beanetics Coffee Roasters from Aug. 24 through Oct. 18 as part of the Artopolis art project.
The Corcoran-trained Theresa Martin works in many forms, but this show will feature recent mixed-media and collage works. Her core themes are remembrance and memory.
Theresa works with fabric and found objects, including metal. Her artworks are dense and multi-layered and reflect the careful integration of materials for emotive effect.

The public is invited to meet Theresa at the exhibit’s official opening on Aug. 30, 4-6 p.m., at Beanetics, 7028 Columbia Pike, Annandale. Her work is available for sale from Distinct Studios.
Flavor Hive murals
Flavor Hive moved from food truck to brick-and-mortar with its first location here in Annandale. As with their exceedingly popular offerings, the Flavor Hive team has found a great art combination: pairing Annandale with a professional comic artist.
Matt Johnston, an artist who has worked with DC Comics, especially on the Green Lantern series, is using his distinct style to capture Annandale icons on two interior walls. The floor-to-ceiling mural, to the right of the entrance, is currently underway.
Swing by Flavor Hive at 4260 John Marr Drive during business hours to see Matt working on this frenetic image.

Matt and the Flavor Hive team are also thinking about an exterior mural that would capture the energy of the business and its ownership team. Once the interior murals are finished, they hope to start work on the rear and side facades for what promises to be a lively and dramatic series of images.
