Community members are invited to participate in the Annandale Rotary Club’s Flags for Our Heroes project.

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the club will install 250 full-size American flags in downtown Annandale from Flag Day, June 14, to the Fourth of July.

“This is an opportunity to bring our community together in a moving tribute to local and personal heroes while raising funds for local charitable work,” says Kate Walter, the Annandale Rotary Club’s community service chair.

Fifty of the flags will be installed around American Legion Post 1976 at 4206 Daniels Ave., and 200 will be at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space at 7200 Columbia Pike.

Individuals and businesses are encouraged to sponsor flags in tribute to a veteran, first responder, healthcare worker, teacher, parent or other family member, friend, mentor, or community hero. The name of the hero will be on a sign at the flag and will be posted on the Rotary Club’s website.

There are several sponsorship levels, ranging from $50 for one flag to $2,500 for 20 flags. Learn more on the Flags for Our Heroes website.

All proceeds will support Annandale Rotary Club programs, including scholarships for local students, youth leadership programs, community service projects, and local charities.

The public is invited to three events for Flags for Our Heroes:

  • An Opening Ceremony on June 14, at 3 p.m., at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space.
  • A Community Appreciation Concert featuring the Josh Allen Band on June 28, 5-8 p.m., at American Legion Post 1976.
  • And a Closing Ceremony on July 4, 1 p.m., at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space.

Last November, the Annandale Rotary Club organized a similar Flags for Our Heroes program with 50 flags for Veterans Day.
