Board to hold hearing on proposed admissions tax

Movie tickets at the Angelika Film Center, currently closed, would cost a little more if Fairfax County approves an admissions tax.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 9-1 March 24
to advertise a public hearing on a proposed ordinance to establish an
admissions tax.

The ordinance would levy a 4 percent tax on performances,
exhibitions, sports events, movies, concerts, fairs, and other events open to
the public. Events conducted for charitable purposes would be excluded. The new
tax is expected to generate more than $3 million a year.

The only supervisor to vote against having a hearing on the
proposal was Pat Herrity (Springfield).

The public hearing would be scheduled for April 14. The
board would consider adoption of the ordinance at its April 29 meeting, and if approved,
the new tax would take effect on Oct. 1.

  1. Well, thanks to the new Democratic majority in the legislature, the BOS now has the authority to create new regressive taxes on a whim. This upcoming hearing is merely a formality. I wonder how long it will take for the BOS to slap a meals tax on all those obliging Fairfax voters. – Sparky
