Crime rose in 2022 in Mason District

The Mason Police Station is in the Mason Government Center on Columbia Pike in Annandale.

Crime has risen in the Mason Police District in nearly every category in 2022 compared to 2021.  

Crimes with the biggest increases include weapons violations, narcotics, robbery, and larceny.

The following crime statistics are from a State of the Station presentation by Mason Police District Commander Capt. Loriann LaBarca and Lt. Daniel Spital at the April Community Advisory Committee meeting

The first number refers to the number of crimes in the Mason Police District* in 2022. The number in parentheses is for 2021.

Crimes against persons

  • Assault offenses – 1,514 (1,419)
  • Homicide (murder/manslaughter) – 3 (3)
  • Kidnapping/abduction – 28 (17)
  • Forcible sex offenses – 65 (47)

Crimes against property

  • Arson – 2 (3)
  • Bribery – 0 (1)
  • Burglary/breaking and entering – 64 (59)
  • Counterfeiting/forgery – 52 (38)
  • Destruction/damage/vandalism – 593 (637)
  • Embezzlement – 13 (13)
  • Extortion/blackmail – 21 (16)
  • Fraud offenses – 375 (383)
  • Larceny/theft – 2,019 (1,701)
  • Auto theft – 172 (158)
  • Robbery – 102 (69)
  • Stolen property offenses – 6 (6)

Crimes against society

  • Drug/narcotic offenses – 333 (219)
  • Gambling offenses – 1 (4)

The Mason Police District had 92 weapon violation arrests, the highest among all Fairfax County police districts. The Mount Vernon Police District had the second highest, with 90, and McLean had 42. None of the others had more than 28.

Crashes

  • Alcohol-related crashes in the Mason Police District – 56 (57)
  • Pedestrian crashes – 33 (21)
  • Fatal crashes – 10 (4)

Neighborhood patrols

The Mason Police District’s neighborhood patrol unit made 230 arrests in 2022.

The McLean Police District NPU had the most, with 290. Franconia had 236 NPU arrests, Sully had 175, Mount Vernon had 117, Reston had 76, Fair Oaks had 74, and West Springfield had 20. 

Calls for service

Mason had the most total calls for service – 58,247 – among all county police stations in 2022.

Calls for service to the Mason Police District increased in 2022 in all three categories: general calls for service – 32,434, criminal calls – 11,000, and traffic calls – 14,813.

* The Mason Police District is not contiguous with the Mason supervisory district. The Mason Police District is bordered by Little River Turnpike, Arlington Boulevard, Arlington County, and the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, and Alexandria.

  1. I can only imagine how many victims never reported the crime. My neighbor’s truck was broken into this weekend. There was glass and blood all over the passenger seat. He says “it’s a waste of to report it because no one cares any more.”

  2. Let the BoS increase our taxes and give themselves a raise, and what do we get? More crime for our money. Only in Fairfax, where being incompetent gets rewarded!
