Fairfax County drops plans for a USD

Fairfax County’s proposal for a Unified Sanitation District is dead, at least for the time being.

notice posted by Public Works and Environmental Services says, “The county has withdrawn the USD proposal and is taking no further action.”

The USD concept, which called for the county to administer trash service for all single-family residents in a defined area, was met with strong opposition from residents, HOA leaders, and private trash haulers.

PWES Director Chris Herrington told the Board of Supervisors’ Environment Committee on May 12, “Absent further direction, staff is ending all work on the Unified Sanitary District model.”

“We’ve heard from our stakeholders on the USD pretty clearly that this is not the model we want to move forward,” said committee chair Dalia Palchik (Providence).

“I don’t think it got a fair airing, despite the efforts that staff made to make sure citizens understood what it meant,” said Board Chair Jeff McKay. “It would have solved some things that people complained about, such as ‘why are there 15 trash trucks on my street?’”

“It was a missed opportunity,” McKay said. “It went south for communications reasons, because it was hard to explain to people and because of all the state hoops we had to jump through.”

Had the BoS decided to authorize a USD, there would be a five-year waiting period before it could take effect.

  1. There go the payoffs and the re-election contributions.

Next up – don’t approve the 125 unit condo building.

  2. Thank goodness – our HOA uses Trash Away twice a week – we don’t have to use monster trash cans (there’s no place to store them conveniently and easily for those of us without garages).

    1. Yes. According to McKay, you’re a bimbo if you are a woman who disagrees with a BOS decision, and if you are a resident who expresses your opinion, you are just too stupid to understand the complexity of an issue. Great leadership!

  3. *“We’ve heard from our stakeholders on the USD pretty clearly that this is not the model we want to move forward,” said committee chair Dalia Palchik (Providence).*

The same Dalia Palchik who led the BOS charge for the twice voted down Meals Tax. Talk about the wishes of the stakeholders.

  4. My neighbor Emily tells me not to put dog poop in her garbage can but she leaves the cans outside all week. I don’t think she should have the right to tell me that. She even put a sticker saying no dog poop. Is that defacing public property. The can does not belong to her anyway. Who does she think she is.

    1. My dog poops a mile away from my apartment in front of Emily house. I don’t want to carry it that is why It is smell. Next question.
